A Tribute

The Starship model for people who care what it is made from.

If someone asks us for the best Starship model we can make, this is our answer: not a rough 3D printed shell with visible layer lines, but stainless steel, cut, welded, and polished until it behaves like a small spacecraft skin.

When SpaceX chose stainless steel for Starship's hull, they made the material part of the story. We wanted the model to carry that same idea physically: cold metal, real weight, and a mirror surface instead of printed texture.

We built this piece as a tribute. So we used the same material — pure 304 stainless steel. Not a printed shell. Not a light desk prop. The body, the flaps, even the three large and three small Raptor engine bells at the base — six CNC-machined engine bells — are cut from solid 304, then polished by hand to a true mirror.

No shortcuts.

Before we kept our first piece, we scrapped dozens of trials — sorting out the toolpaths, the polishing order, the buffing compound mix. Every piece since carries the cost of that process.

Detail

No detail too small.

Engine bells

Engine bells

Three large, three small. Each Raptor bell micro-machined from solid 304, then hand polished so the engine section stays crisp instead of softened like a printed detail.

Body

Body

Single-piece machined upper section. Lower section welded at a barely-visible seam.

Nose

Nose

Mirror-polished nose cone. Reflects the room around it like a wide-angle lens.

Full body

Full body

350 mm tall. 2.3 kg in the hand. Heavy enough to feel real, light enough to lift.

Desktop Setup

A 35 cm presence object.

It doesn't ask for attention. It rewards it.

On a desk

A presence object. Reflects the room.

In a living space

Among the things you live with.

On a sideboard

Next to candles, plants, the rest of your taste.

Process

Three days of polishing.

Per piece. By hand.

Hand finishing

Hand finishing

STEP 01

Lathe

Turning the body cylinders from solid 304 rod stock.

STEP 02

Mill

Cutting wing slots, fin contours, engine pocket geometry.

STEP 03

Weld

Joining body sections, attaching wings.

STEP 04

Sand

Twelve grits, increasing fineness, removing every machine line.

STEP 05

Polish

Buffing wheels, polishing compounds, three days by hand.

STEP 06

Inspect

Under direct light, looking for any defect that survived.

Hollow-bored internally — so the piece weighs 2.3 kg instead of the 7.5 kg of a solid version. Heavy in the hand. Liftable. Not a paperweight.

Why stainless

Same material as the real ship.

The real Starship is built from pure 304 stainless. We matched it — exactly.

A 3D printed Starship can capture the silhouette, but it often shows layer lines, softened edges, rough texture, light weight, and a toy-like feel under close inspection.

Stainless is harder, slower, denser, and unforgiving of mistakes. It's also the only material that holds a true mirror for years.

So we picked stainless.

Material comparison

Stainless steel vs 3D printed Starship models.

Many 3D printed Starship models look acceptable in a small photo. On a desk, the layer lines, dull surface, light weight, and softened details are much harder to ignore.

3D printed Starship model beside the Vokar stainless steel Starship model

304 stainless steel

Vokar choice

Dense, cold, corrosion resistant, and capable of a maintainable mirror polish. Slow to machine, slow to finish, but materially honest.

3D printed plastic

Visible layer lines

Affordable and easy to make, but layer lines, rough texture, and softened detail usually show as soon as the model is close to your eyes.

Painted 3D print

Photo-friendly

Paint can hide some flaws in photos, but it cannot add real metal weight, cold touch, or a maintainable mirror-polished surface.

Desktop feel

Long-term difference

A light printed model can feel like a prop. A 2.3 kg stainless steel piece feels like a serious object every time you move it.

Buying guide

How to judge a Starship model before buying.

The best Starship model is not decided by one render. Look for material disclosure, scale, weight, engine detail, surface finish, packaging, and whether the seller can explain the process.

Material

Ask what the object is actually made from, not only what it looks like.

Weight

Weight is not everything, but a serious metal model should not feel empty.

Engine detail

The base reveals whether the maker treated the model as sculpture or merchandise.

Finish

A real mirror polish reflects the room; a coating only reflects the shortcut.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is this the best Starship model?+
That is the standard we build toward. Instead of making a lightweight display toy, we chose 304 stainless steel, a 2.3 kg hollow-bored body, six CNC-machined engine bells, welded construction, and three days of hand polishing. If your benchmark is material honesty, weight, mirror finish, and desk presence, this is the most uncompromising Starship model we know how to make.
Why only $300?+
Honestly, this could go for far more. Lathe → mill → weld → three days of polishing, every piece consumes a working day, and every visible surface has to be finished by hand. We chose $300 not because it's what the work is worth, but because we'd rather make a friend than a margin.
Hollow or solid?+
Hollow. We bore out the interior on the lathe. Solid would weigh 7.5 kg — too heavy to handle. Hollow is 2.3 kg — substantial but liftable.
Why not 3D print it?+
3D printing is useful for prototypes, but the layer lines, rough texture, light weight, and softened details are not the feeling we wanted for a serious Starship model. We made it from stainless steel because the material is the point.
Will I see hand marks on the surface?+
Almost none. Each piece is hand-finished, so a faint trace here or there is normal — we treat those micro-marks as evidence of process.
Do I need to maintain it?+
In a normal indoor environment, no. In coastal salt air, wipe occasionally with a dry cloth. A microfiber cloth and a stainless polish (Flitz, Brasso) restores the gloss in minutes.

Limited workshop output.

Each piece is finished in small batches. Orders are processed in the order they arrive.
